Mai Tai
The name of the Mai Tai cocktail comes from the Tahitian word maita'i, which means "good" or "excellence". The drink is said to have been named by the first person to try it, who exclaimed "Mai Tai!" to express how great it was.
- 1/2 oz. light rum
- 1/2 oz. dark rum
- 3/4 oz. Orange Curacao
- 1/2 oz. Orgeat
- 3/4 oz. lime juice
- 1 8 oz. can of Pineapple Juice (optional)
For the traditional Mai Tai, mix everything except the pineapple juice. Serve over ice. Personally, I like to add one small 8-oz. can of pineapple juice. That way it lasts longer and isn't as potent.
Orange Curacao can be bought at most liquor stores, it's not cheap (about $50 a bottle) but it's the real deal. Orgeat (pronounced "or-ZHAT") is basically "simple syrup" with a slight almond flavor. You can find that at the grocery store or on Amazon.
